As many Americans watch their savings erode and the prospects of losing their jobs approaching like a runaway train, they wonder where is this change they can believe in? Of course many Americans have no savings left and are already out of work, and their plight is even more arduous as they are faced with real emotional pain as well.
It is time for the citizens of this great country of ours to revolt. Of course I'm not advocating any violence, but the nonsense being promulgated by our lawmakers as stimulus or help for it's constituents through federal tax dollars is nothing more than a sham.
Nothing has changed in Washington with the arrival of a new administration and an even greater number of his party occupying both houses of congress except the spin.
If every American doesn't understand this, then shame on them. Wake up people. Many of the elected officials we send to Washington to make our laws are looking out for you in name only. As long as you look to Washington to rescue you, you'll continue to end up with less money, less security and most importantly less liberty.
Now I'm not blaming all of the countries troubles on the lawmakers, even though they deserve much of it. I'm blaming you the American citizen as well. We have the government we do because the American citizen was at the very least negligent in staying informed.
Now I'm not talking about every American, as our country is also comprised of hard working people that understand that whatever you get that you don't earn, has strings attached. Eventually there will be a price to pay, and quite often that price is greater than the benefit received in the first place.
The citizens of our country have a real disconnect with their fellow man, and this has caused a breakdown in the community spirit our nation was built on. Many people separate from their ever smaller families sooner, stay in their air-conditioned homes in front of the latest technological wizardry and cable TV, and rely less on the guidance and support from their places of worship. Is there any wonder when times become difficult, most turn to their government for help?
The problem lies with the flawed thinking, that our lawmakers in Washington would be better stewards of your hard earned tax dollars than you would be yourself. Let me give you an example. Most of us pay taxes to our local city government, as well as county, state and federal government. Now if you didn't like the way your city was spending your taxes, even a small percentage of citizens could go to a city council meeting and make a big stink about it and effect a change. As our tax dollars go farther and farther away from us, that change becomes harder and harder to effect.
There is no dispute that Americans need services that are unrealistic for the local community to provide like national defense for example, but many federal programs only return a fraction of the dollar sent to Washington because of the various interests that can exert tremendous influence on our lawmakers to direct our tax dollars where they chose.
Why is this?
Well our elected officials treat what our founding fathers intended to be an act of selfless service to their country, as a career instead. Now you and I can go to work for a company, or start a business and have a legitimate expectation of having a career as long as we stay educated and competitive with our coworkers or competing businesses. However the career mentality of elected officials dictates they pander to those that can get them re-elected, and that quite often means sacrificing what's in the best interests of average citizen that doesn't have a collective voice or the money to promote our lawmakers quest to stay in office. This is why so many average citizens believe our government doesn't work.
If we want change we can believe in, we need to examine how we can reverse this antiquated and quite often corrupt system.
Of course I have some suggestions and would greatly encourage your input and ideas as well. This is our country, and everyone of us needs to become more active in our knowledge of what is going on and demand a reversal of our lawmakers conducting business as usual.
* If the President can only run for two terms in office, why should our legislators make a career out of elected office?
* What company could you work for that would allow you to decide if you get a raise or not? Tell me how congressman have the right to vote for their own pay raises then?
* Why should the everyday citizen pay for a high priced insurance and pension program for lawmakers that they have no access to? If our elected officials had to secure and pay for health insurance like the average American or company does, maybe they would pass some legitimate legislation to curtail health care costs.
* Did you know that a lawmaker can receive their full salary in retirement after serving only one term in office? We need to get rid of that pension plan as many private companies have had to get rid of theirs. Even if you have a private pension plan, you'd be lucky to get 50% of your salary after working somewhere for 20 years but Congress gets 100%?
* Make Congress pay into the Social Security system. They make the laws for it and if they had to pay into it they might be more interested in making it solvent.
* Secure our borders and stop allowing babies born to illegal aliens in the United States automatic US citizens.
* Stop the ABUSE of our benevolent welfare system. Churches give away good, clean clothes and food. Companies buy and donate school supplies. Emergency rooms provide health care at taxpayer expense and the food stamps program is buying food at home. What are parents doing for their children?
* Have a computer program that cross checks Social Security numbers with fingerprints to stop fraud on many levels and use it on voter registration as well.
* Stop bailing out mortgage companies and banks that loan out money to people who cannot afford to repay it. The government might then have more money to take care of the truly sick and elderly as well as our national defense.
* File a tax lien on companies that have paid bonuses and large salaries to employees after requesting government assistance and demand the top executives and board of directors to resign.
* Whoever the President is, he will not be able to make these changes as only members of Congress can do this, as they are the lawmakers.
After witnessing what has transpired in this new era of change we can believe in, I don't believe Congress is interested in changing anything, do you?
